Experi-
ments

Year: 2000
Animator: Haig Bedrossian
Motion graphics and design in Adobe After Effects, Cinema4D

On the broadcast-design circuit I rolled out a laptop-forged video, an off-the-cuff collision of type and image to supercharge my talk on fearless experimentation. Speaker 2000-2004.

Universal
Television

Distressed was still hot in the late 90s. I designed Universal’s new action-thriller channel from blank slate to on-air roar—naming it, designing the visual language, logo, producers video guides, website, and assets for channel marketing. I worked with a great team and learned about PAL color conversion (long story). I got bring its cross-France/Germany/Spain and localize the identity for different languages. The highlight was schooling producers with a bulletproof style guide, and running launch ops from a central Paris broadcast perch. This project took about 8 months to launch. That included Universal meetings discussing what kind of channel we would produce with their vast library and what the tv market demanded. Working with so many people around the world from Watertown Massachusetts was a great experience, namely France, LA, and NYC.

Year: 1999
Agency: Hatmaker
Haig Bedrossian, Design Director
Tom Corey, Executive CD
Team: Marianna Gracey, Scott Greig, Ted Smykal & Marsha Armstrong.

The result was a compelling and emotionally based adaptable name – 13th Street and street sign logo. The on-air package was adapted to each country and modified to each unique culture. Subsequently, over a year since the launch, the channel stole the position of “highest rated action/suspense channel” in France. The package has also won numerous BDA North American and BDA Europe awards.

Oxygen

Year: 2002
Agency: Hatmaker

Haig Bedrossian, Design Director.
Prang Tharawanich, Designer.
Oxygen Client: Bee Murphy.

I helmed Oxygen’s on-air debut, crafting the network’s IDs and the interstitial storytelling that breathes between shows. I worked with Roger Miller on all the music and sound design.

Cable
Positive+

Year: 1997
Agency: Hatmaker
Haig Bedrossian, Design Director and Animator
PSA: 30 sec

During the ’90s HIV-awareness push, I crafted a PSA that hijacked familiar brand logos—to steal equity from familiar brand iconography morphed into a blunt health warning. This is the video draft I made (sketch!) in a couple hours in Adobe After Effects. Then I got funding from Cable Positive. (I have no idea where the final broadcast version is, the logos were all redrawn.)

HBO

Year: 1999
Agency: Hatmaker

Haig Bedrossian, Designer.
Chris Goviea Creative Director.
Austin Wallender, Animator.

Television was still 3:4 ratio. I created the on-air identities that give HBO’s Cinemax, MoreMax, and ThrillerMax their pulse.

Water

Year: 2005
Duration: 1 minute
Medium: Motion, Film, Sound design

This is an audio brand concept. This unproduced concept distills water to its scientific core—visuals/sounds of precision-formulated, clinic-clean, radically simple, refreshingly within reach. I generated sounds with my old analog synthesizer and created a binaural beats instagram post with its auditory signature effect. The visuals are inner distortions of information displaced by water distortions.
